Tuesday 6th December – Ely Methodist Church – Family Concert by Steve Bingham
On Tuesday 6th December – St Nicholas’ Day – at 7.30pm, Ely Methodist Church will be the venue for a family concert organised by professional violinist and conductor Steve Bingham.
The highlight of the evening will be an exciting version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale A Christmas Carol for narrator and string quartet. Steve and his wife Brenda (who will be playing the viola part in the piece), commissioned the work in 1993 in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, where their son Chris had had successful heart surgery. It’s a delightful, evocative and ultimately heart-warming musical treat!
The programme will also include the iconic violin concerto Winter, from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, performed by Steve with a select group of local string players. Steve and pianist Phil Toms will also play Alfred Schnittke’s strangely haunting version of Silent Night, and there will be a selection of songs by folk singer-songwriter Jeremy Harmer, who will also narrate the Dickens.
Tickets, costing £14 (£10 concessions or £30 for family groups) are available on the door or in advance from www.music.stevebingham.co.uk/merch and each ticket purchased online includes a free download of one of Steve’s solo recordings.
Steve Bingham is well-known to Ely audiences as Artistic Director of Ely Sinfonia, and his concerts are always popular! His career as a violinist encompasses everything from string quartet playing and orchestral leading, to recording and live concert performances with a variety of world class pop and rock musicians. Steve has recorded numerous CDs with his Bingham Quartet, alongside five solo albums, with a new solo CD currently in the pipeline.
Cambridge-based writer, raconteur and folk musician Jeremy Harmer is a leading light in the English language teaching community but pursues an alter ego as a singer-songwriter, performing widely in the local folk scene.
Steve will also be joined by his wife, Brenda Stewart, a professional viola player and violist of the Bingham Quartet; the cellist of the Cambridge String Quartet, Joshua Lynch; keyboard player, composer and arranger Phil Toms; and the Ad Hoc Strings, a group of Cambridgeshire-based string players.
