There is something about the thought of home décor that sounds quite a bit more challenging than it really needs to be. There are a few basic rules, so to speak, and once you understand the process, you’ll find it much simpler than you had imagined. Whether you are undergoing a DIY home renovation or are moving into a new home, you are anxious to begin decorating, especially before the Christmas holidays. To say it’s as easy as 1-2-3 really isn’t that far off the mark.

Home decorStart at the Beginning

What is the first thing you see when you approach your home? That’s right! You see the front door, so that’s where you should start. The front door to your home tells a lot about the people living within so whether you simply want to resurface and paint your door, or put in a whole new windowed door, make sure it makes a statement about who you are.

The Entryway Inside

Once the door is opened, the next thing anyone sees is your entryway. This is where you can give the first few hints of what is to come. Some families like to place a coat rack, a potted plant and even a statue or two on the console (entryway table) to make a statement of faith. Quite often these little figurines are purchased from religious stores online along with the crucifix that will hang above the entryway door on the inside. Not only do these things add a lovely bit of décor but they speak of what this family is all about.

Common Areas

There are actually two common areas in many homes which include the living room and the dining room. While some smaller homes have an eat-in kitchen, many homes have a dining area set right off the living room. With a growing trend toward open space architecture, most newer homes have one large common area that combines the living and dining area. For the living room, it is suggested that you place furniture in a U shape so that it’s a continuation from chairs to sofa to chairs. The colour scheme should be carried through to the dining room and the furniture should all be from the same period although there is nothing wrong with having different styles and eras for other separate rooms in the home.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

You may have one guest bathroom that really should be reserved for guests. This will probably be more stylish than the family bathroom or master bathroom, but the key is to keep it clean and sanitary at all times. This is difficult to do if the kids come running in from playing outdoors to wash their face and hands in the guest bathroom sink. Always keep guest rooms clean and ready because you never know when someone will show up at your door unannounced. As for décor, do those rooms in warm and welcoming colours with a few bits of nature such as succulent plants that need little tending.

You can always work on areas of the home where you won’t be entertaining such as the bedrooms and perhaps the playroom and home office, so if time and finance is at a premium, feel free to decorate those rooms last. You see? It really isn’t all that difficult once you understand how to work décor with the flow of traffic through the home.
