Historical Sites to Visit in the UK
With buildings and ruins that date back hundreds of years, the UK has some of the most exciting historical sites to visit anywhere in the world – it’s often easy to look at a trip further afield to see parts of history, but places closer to home are often overlooked. It can often be easy to forget how much history the UK has in a haze of all things new and digital with online options including some non Gamstop poker sites, or modern streaming for TV and movies providing a well sought after distraction – but there’s plenty of history to be found.
The UK is home to some magnificent cathedrals with the belief that they once were the mark of what transformed a town into a city – whilst that’s no longer the case, it does mean there are some fantastic cathedrals to visit. Eyes may turn to cities like London, but those in Cambridgeshire like Ely Cathedral which dates back to 1083 show British heritage and history unlike other sites across the country and is one of the biggest cathedrals in the UK with over 1,000 years of history behind it.
Going much further north can bring the exploration of many castles along the way and exciting sites of the past, but perhaps nothing more grandiose that Hadrian’s Wall which still stands as an exciting historical monument today – built by the Roman’s some 1,800 years ago as a barrier between the north of England and Scotland, it’s one of the oldest historical monuments that still exist within the UK and worth a trip north to see with very little that compares to the scale of the wall even today.

Further north still to the small islands of Orkney, Papa Westray is the home to the oldest structures in the UK, and perhaps the oldest preserved stone homes in all of northern Europe – suggested to be around 5,721 years old, this predates even some of the biggest and oldest structures in the world such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, despite being just a small homestead, it’s fantastic to have such a fascinating historical site so close to home, particularly being well preserved and close enough to visit without trouble.
For those interested in seeing these impressive sites, there’s no need to travel to sites across the world to view buildings of ancient Greece, the Roman empire, or the ancient Egyptians, and sites just as exciting and just as impactful can be found all over the UK.
