Moving is one of the most stressful times in someone’s life, so it is important to make sure that you do this in an organised manner.

This article has been written to help guide you through the process of moving, from choosing your new residence to packing up your old home.

What Happens When You Move?

Moving is not an easy task, but it does not need to be arduous either if you take control and follow these steps.

This guide is designed for those who do not have much experience with house moves and want to avoid any pitfalls that can occur along the way

Step 1: Planning Your Move

The first thing that you should do when moving house is to create a list of all the things that you will need to complete this process.

These are things such as finding a conveyancer, sourcing packing boxes, organising your removals company, and any other issues that you may experience.

A removals company will likely be one of the most expensive parts of your move. Make sure your removals company is insured too.

Step 2: Cleaning Your Old House

Cleaning will be the next step that needs your attention when moving house. This includes cleaning all rooms and scrubbing down surfaces.

Make sure you also clean out any storage areas or hideaways as well. The last thing to take into consideration when cleaning is making sure everything has been packed away tidily into your boxes.

Step 3: The Art Of Packing

The last thing that you should be doing is packing up your belongings.

Before packing, it is advised to make a checklist of everything that you will need to pack and make sure that you have enough space for it all in your removals van.

You should then allocate your boxes room by room – for example, in the kitchen, work out how many boxes you’ll need by doing a proper assessment of your possessions and how they’ll need to be packed.

Some people find it easier to colour code boxes, but whatever you do, be sure to label the boxes appropriately. Washing machines and the like should not be placed inside boxes unless they are being transported by a removals company.

Step 4: Moving Day

Moving day is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking at the same time, so take a few deep breaths and remember that if anything goes wrong, it will not ruin your life. The only way that you can get through this journey is to remain calm and move forward.

Once the day has arrived, make sure you double-check your packing lists and make sure you have everything with you. Also, never rush when packing or loading your belongings into the removals van.

You will want to take plenty of breaks so that your back does not become strained, which is why we advise moving on a weekend or bank holiday, if possible.

Top Tip: You will also want to pack a light lunch for yourself, such as sandwiches in a cool bag, in case you get hungry during the process of moving.

Step 5: Taking The Removals Van To Your New Residence

This step is only really applicable if you are using a removals company to carry out your move.

Conveyancers handle everything from the paperwork to the initial collection of your belongings, but it is often best for those who have experienced this before to organise the moving van themselves.

You should always ensure that there are no scratches or dents on the vehicle that indicate damage, as this could increase costs and cause delays.

How To Get Settled In At Your New House

Since moving house is a stressful process, there are also a couple of things that you can do to try and relax whilst settling in at your new place.

Giving your new home a quick spring clean as you move in can help it feel like a clean slate, as can decorating as soon as possible when you get the keys.

Comforting Your Nerves

Another thing that you can try is to use calming music in the background when settling in. Music such as classical music or any type of ambient music will be best.

This will help you feel more composed if anything goes wrong during the process of moving into your new house, be it an issue with the furniture or even if you have difficulty finding the tea bags!
