We do need to make our homes more eco-friendly and reduce our own carbon footprint. Carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of our activities.
By cutting down on our carbon footprint, we will be helping to protect our planet, as well as protecting ourselves from air, water, and noise pollution, and the deterioration of our health that non-eco-friendly living forces upon us.
There are benefits other than to our health, to living in an eco-friendlier world such as sustainability, better environment, there are some financial benefits too.
There are a few ways which we can all help with being more eco-friendly, especially within our own homes.
Installing Solar panels
By going off-grid and installing solar panels, we are cutting down on our carbon footprint. By having solar panels, you can bring down the monthly cost of your household bills. They can increase the value of your home, and should there be any power cuts, you will still be able to function with your own solar-powered electricity.
Changing how you heat your home
Another way to become more eco-friendly is to ditch the old gas boiler and go for something new such as an air source heat pump. An air-source heat pump can reduce your monthly bills and have better safety and lower maintenance costs than of a traditional boiler. Couple this with positives with the fact that they are helping to protect the planet and reduce health issues.
Changing the way we shop
The quickest eco-friendly change you can make is when you shop. Cut down the number of times you go to the shop and try only once a week. Try not to use the car, try public transport instead as this is less petrol or diesel fumes being pumped into the atmosphere. Or look to do your shopping more locally to you so that you can walk rather than drive to the shop.
You can make the best change by ditching the plastic bags completely and carry your own reusable material shopping bags instead. Of course, many of us are already doing this, but the problem is not wanting to use these types of bags but remembering to take them with us into the shops.
The best thing to do in this scenario is to make sure that you always have plenty of bags in your car, so if you forget to take them into the shop, you can just pack everything back into the trolley at the checkout and then pack your groceries into your bags back at your car.
If you are not using your car, make sure that when you unpack your shopping at home that you put all your reusable shopping bags into one bag and put it by the door before you are due to leave for the shop. If this is still not working, maybe a note on the back of the front door at your eye height may remind you to pick up your bags when you go shopping.
