When the winter is dragging on, and the rain never seems to want to go away, we find ourselves looking at the sporting calendar for the events that signal the end of the bad weather.

March and April time brings some fantastic sporting events, and many of them help signal the end of the British winter and some better spring and summer weather ahead.

We’ve picked out some of the significant sporting events that generally herald the beginning of better weather to come!

The Final Weekend of the Six Nations

This might seem like a strange one, as we often associate the Six Nations with the short, dark days of winter, but the final weekend around the second weekend of March is often a time when the sun tends to come out of its hibernation and make an appearance.

There’s still a reasonable chance you’ll be watching the winning team lift the Six Nations trophy in the pouring rain, but there is some chance of a bit of sun and some spring air for the weekend (at least in Italy).

The Grand National

Move things on another few weeks, and the weather is bound to be looking a bit peachier. British horse racing’s biggest event takes place on the first weekend of April, and while it’s undoubtedly been run in some horrible weather, there are plenty of times where there’s been a much more summery feel.

It won’t make much difference to the Grand National runners, but the punters will be hoping for some sunshine and a bit of warmth.

The Masters at Augusta

While we sit and watch the wonderful weather at the Masters’ golf championship in Augusta, Georgia, we don’t always have the same great weather to look at out of our own windows, but it’s certainly a time when things start to pick up.

Even if the weather isn’t so good, looking at the amazing surrounds of the Augusta club sparkling in the sun can only get you more excited for summer.

The London Marathon

One of the most significant outdoor events of the year, the London Marathon takes places at the end of April, and surely the weather must be good by now! Well, it’s not always the case, but we often get a beautiful day as the runners snake their way around London on the 26-mile course.

Spring has sprung by this point, and we’re oh so close to the summer.

The FA Cup

The FA Cup final is categorical proof that summer is arriving, even with the UK’s unpredictable weather.

The crowd are out in their t-shirts, and you know it’s time for the football season to end, and the cricket season to take its place in the sun. You’ve now got all the delights of a summer of sport to look forward to, and the long, wet, winter is far behind us.

Whether you like football or not, it’s a great sign, when you see the FA Cup final on TV!
