Love your local market this Valentine’s Day
On Saturday 14 February, shoppers, residents and visitors will have the chance to show their love for one of Ely’s most favourite markets.
This year it’s Ely Farmers’ Market’s 15th birthday – to be celebrated on Saturday 27 June. To mark the occasion, people are being asked to give their memories of the market on special blackboards to use in the summer celebrations.
The memories can be about the early days of the Farmers’ Market or can delve further back into the past to highlight what markets in Ely used to be like in the previous decades.
The Valentine’s Day Farmers’ Market will have all the usual great local produce which shoppers have come to expect. For example, there will find fresh vegetables from Littleport and Coveney, fresh fish from Norfolk, as well as everything from artisan meats and pies to gourmet brownies – all mainly sourced from within a 30 mile radius of Ely.
Tracey Harding, Team Leader Tourism and Town Centre Services at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “This year is a special time for the Farmers’ Market as we celebrate 15 years since the first traders set up on the Market Place. Over the next few months, we’ll be organising a range of activities and special events to celebrate this milestone. We are going to start on Valentine’s Day by asking people to give us their market memories to tell their story about why they love the Farmers’ Market.
“The Market has gone from strength to strength throughout its 15 years built on the incredible local produce on sale. Shoppers know they can trust the traders and the Market to deliver the best – this element of trust is fundamental to the creating the huge crowds which come to the Market. So come and tell us your thoughts to help us celebrate the Farmers’ Market before the big day in June.”
