It’s not as easy as it used to be to find a regular game of live poker in Ely and East Cambridgeshire. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to help you find some of the best poker games and nights operated by pubs and bars in the Ely region.
We’ve had to branch out into the Cambridge area, but we’ve ensured all recommended poker games are within easy reach by train or car. Meanwhile one of our suggestions doesn’t require you to leave the confines of your Ely home whatsoever. Intrigued? Read on to find out more.
The King’s Arms, Ely
The number-one venue for poker games in the city of Ely is The King’s Arms. A poker night is held here every Wednesday night. There’s a regular crowd of players who venture to this pub on St Mary’s Street, a stone’s throw from the High Street and the truly historic Cathedral.
Parking is very close by on St Mary’s Street. It’s free to park here after 6pm until 8am, so it’s a very convenient spot for poker nights when games may go on longer than anticipated.
WT’s Sports Bar, Cambridge
If you’re prepared to venture into Cambridge, there’s several options, none better than at WT’s Sports Bar on Burleigh Street. Here, you’ll find poker tournaments offered four days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. WT’s Sports Bar has its own dedicated poker room, featuring multiple high-end poker tables, creating an authentic gaming atmosphere.
The tournaments begin at 8pm sharp, with registration open on the day. Entry fees are £10, plus a £2 registration fee and the maximum number of players per tournament is capped at 25. The venue also offers live sports, 19 snooker and pool tables and a video jukebox.
The Brook, Cambridge
The Brook is a popular Greene King pub located on the popular Mill Road, just a ten-minute walk from Cambridge train station. Poker nights are operated here every Tuesday and Sunday night, attracting plenty of locals, as well as players venturing from further afield, including the Ely area.
On Tuesdays, The Brook’s kitchen is open until 9.30pm and it’s open until 9pm on Sundays, so it’s always an option to pop in for some dinner before the real poker action begins. It’s a friendly pub which also shows regular live sporting events throughout the venue.
Poker Home Games, Anywhere
If you’d rather play poker with your friends but they live further afield, all is not lost. With PokerStars’ new Home Games functionality, it’s possible to create your own virtual private poker club. It’s free to set up a private club. Once your club is active, you can send your friends the club name and ID number, allowing them to submit an application to join your club.
Without giving out the club name and ID number, no-one else will even know your virtual poker club exists. It’s the best way of arranging private games online, which are compatible with all desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Within the software’s official guide, you’ll find ways to setup cash games as well as tournaments, if that’s what you and your pals prefer.
The White Horse, Oakington
The White Horse in Oakington is a lively village pub, situated due north-east of Cambridge city centre. From Ely, Oakington is within easy reach by car via the A10 or the B1049 via Cottenham. Its poker nights have been popular for many years.
The White Horse has also played host to the Cambridge Pub Poker organisation, which ran a Summer League for locals earlier this year. The pub itself is a friendly establishment, serving tasty pub meals alongside a great choice of drinks. Food serving times start from 6pm until 9pm on weekdays and Saturdays and until 8pm on Sundays if you’re thinking of grabbing a bite to eat before the real action begins.
Hopefully this list offers something for every poker enthusiast in the Ely area. This skill-based card game remains a favourite across Cambridgeshire and elsewhere in East Anglia too.
