Ely Consort – An American Dream – Sutton Church, July 4th
After combining with other Ely choirs & Big Band for the ‘I got Gershwin’ swing concert extravaganza in the Cathedral on June 13th, Ely Consort are delighted to be returning once again to Sutton church on July 4th. This is, of course, American Independence Day and our programme takes an American Theme, under the title “An American Dream”.
The main piece will be Morten Lauridsen’s stunning new Requiem setting, Lux Aeterna – this sublime piece is instantly appealing whether or not you already know Lauridsen’s distinctive style of choral writing. We will also be singing Eric Whitacre’s hauntingly beautiful Sleep, together with his highly theatrical piece Leonardo dreams of his flying machine, Sure on this shining night from Lauridsen’s “Nocturnes”, and HerberAn American Dreamt Howells extraordinarily beautiful setting of Take him, earth, for cherishing, which was written for the memorial service of J. F. Kennedy.
We are delighted to welcome back Jonathan Lilley, now Director of Music at Waltham Abbey Church, to accompany us once again.
Do come along to enjoy this exciting repertoire of American music!
