Ely Consort’s next concert takes place in Ely Methodist Church on Saturday 16 March 2019 at 7.30 pm.The title of the concert, Sing and be joyful, is taken from the opening of Psalm 100, with which we begin our concert in the fantastic setting for double choir by Heinrich Schütz.

Many of the other pieces in the programme are also joyful setting of psalm texts, including Palestrina’s Exsultate Deo (Come, rejoice and sing), Ko Matsushita’s melodic setting of Cantate Domino (Sing to the Lord) and Sweelinck’s Laudate Dominum (O praise the Lord our God).

We are very pleased to welcome local cellist Anna Jones as our instrumental soloist for this concert. In addition her cello solos, Anna will join us in two pieces for choir and cello: Ola Gjeilo’s Serenity and David Brunner’s beautiful piece O Music.

As always, the choir is accompanied by the brilliant pianist Charlie Penn, who will be particularly to the fore in the finale to our concert, the Polovtsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s Prince Igor.

This promises to be a splendid evening of lively, joyful music, and will certainly be full of good melodies!
