Ely Consort to Perform Haydn’s Mass in Time of War
Ely Consort will be performing Haydn’s Mass in Time of War (Paukenmesse) at Sutton, St Andrew’s Church on Saturday 2nd July at 7.30 pm. This is one of Haydn’s most popular settings of the mass; composed in 1796, the highly dramatic music perfectly captures the troubled mood in Austria at the time of the European war that followed the French revolution.
The choir will be joined in the mass by a quartet of fine local soloists – Sarah Rosewell (soprano), Ashley Harries (alto), Mark Hounsell (tenor) and Simon Adams (bass) – and the Con Brio Chamber Orchestra, led by the brilliant violinist Steve Bingham, will accompany.
In the first half of the concert, Steve will be the soloist in Summer from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, and the choir, conducted by Matthew Rudd and accompanied by Charlie Penn, will sing a number of contrasting choral works:
Alessandro Scarlatti: Exsultate, deo
Faure: Cantique de Jean Racine
Lauridsen: O nata lux
Harris: Faire is the Heaven
Holst: I sowed the seeds of love
Holst: Swansea Town
