Barton Road & Fordham facilities to stay open
East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) is pleased to confirm that at the Asset Development Committee meeting on Wednesday 23rd March, the Committee approved the recommendation from Commercial Services Committee to keep both Ely’s Barton Road and Fordham’s public conveniences open.
The retention of the Barton Road facilities requires a contribution of £8000 from Ely City Council, which has been agreed through the collaboration of both Councils. ECDC has also worked closely with Fordham Parish Council, which will take over management of its conveniences at Carter Street, and has agreed to provide a one off contribution of £9555 to help with the costs of running the facilities. It was decided that the local Parish Council was best positioned to look after the facilities ongoing, and the decision to retain them was unanimous.
ECDC has listened to the public and recognises the benefits of the Barton Road site to both its residents and those visiting the historic city from neighbouring villages and further afield. The decision reflects the strong partnership and co-operation between the district’s Councils and ECDC is pleased with the agreements which have been reached, which include an Annual Review of the site.
Councillor Mathew Shuter, of the Asset Development Committee, said at the meeting, “We are pleased to be working together with multiple Councils for the ongoing benefit of our local communities. We are proud to be a listening Council, and will continue to reflect wherever possible the needs and wishes of our constituents. Maintaining the Barton Road facilities will be really positive for local people and visitors to our area, and we are pleased to have reached a satisfactory conclusion to this matter, thanks to collaboration and co-operation with the other local Councils.”
