Christmas Special Guided Tours in Ely
Looking to get out and about this Christmas holiday?
This Christmas, walk off any festive indulgence and learn about the hidden delights of Ely through two special guided tours
The Christmas Combination Tours on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 December at 10.30am will take people on a festive Guided City Walk.
Those on the tour will see the streets of Ely in their Christmas glory and learn a little more about the city. Participants will then return to Oliver Cromwell’s House for morning refreshments in the 17th Century panelled room and then join a costumed guide for a tour of this atmospheric house. Tickets cost £8 and pre-booking is advisable.
Visitors can also come to special ‘Behind Closed Doors – A Cromwellian Christmas’ up until twelfth night. Find out if Cromwell really did ‘ban Christmas’ and how families celebrated behind closed doors. People can explore the House and see if they can spot the Christmas traditions that we associate with the festive season today and find out if they would have featured in the Cromwell household. These are daily self-guided tours please allow minimum of an hour for your visit – normal admission price applies.
Tracey Harding, Tourism Manager at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Christmas is a great time of year but it can be a bit claustrophobic if you have had lots of family and friends round. So this year instead of heading down to the winter sales why not learn a little more about the great city of Ely? We have organised a guided walk to help visitors see Ely in a completely different light and the ‘Behind Closed Doors – A Cromwellian Christmas’ exhibition at the House. So whether it is a belated present or a chance to get out and about – we hope to see you this festive holiday.”
For booking contact the Tourist Information Centre on 01353 662062 or www.visitely.org.uk.
Please note Oliver Cromwell House will be closed on Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
