In all our lives, joy manifests itself in many ways. Equally at Christmas-time, joy is part of a wide variety of experiences.
Described in the simple carol Silent Night, joy is in the calm, the brightness, the tenderness, the humility, the colour, the love, the glory and the grace shown at Christmas.
In the Christmas Cantata by Geoffrey Bush, there is a setting of the traditional carol The Seven Joys of Mary. We hear that she saw the baby in the manger, and she also saw his good works and the miracles he worked. Of course these joys were tinged with the way he was betrayed and put to death, but the seventh joy was to see her son ‘wear the crown of heaven’.
Whatever fills you with joy at this time of year, come and hear it in Gaudete (Rejoice Christ is Born!) and Carol of the Bells, share it and sing about it in Joy to the World and O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! Then we can wish each other ‘the comfort and tidings of joy’, as we launch the festive season in Ely.
