LOST PLANET

More than one thousand years had past since Chuck Yeager had broken the sound barrier, the humans on Earth had put men on the Moon and Space Stations into orbit, but even with improved economies and technologies Man had shown only a passing interest in his future on Earth.

As the 20th century came to and end Man gave the appearance of saving the planet, chemicals banned, transport converted, commodities thrown out.

The replacing of these items only helped to increase the heat output in the manufacturing countries and while everyone was willing to recycle drink containers and paper, motor vehicles increased in size, electrical goods multiplied and central heating systems were turned ever higher.

As one species of animal disappeared after another Mankind suddenly realized he too was on the endangered species list, not from anything he had or had not done but from the very thing that had given him life, the Sun.

As the Sun burnt off its mass at four million tonnes a second, its density decreased and slowly it started to expand sending climates into turmoil laying continents baron by fire and flood, great clouds of smoke and steam drifted overhead.

Man finally realized it was time to go, but go where ?

As development went belatedly fonvard giant Ark Space Stations were sent into orbit, whole families were Shuttled to them each group helping to build the next before moving off into deep space.

On earth people asked how many Arks can be built ... and who will be left behind?

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

The last of the helicopters touched down, the smoke swirled as the group jumped from the open door their face hidden by the dome like helmets and air tight suits.

Man had become an alien on his own planet. The faltering light glowed ahead ...................

"LAUNCH CREWS ONLY"

The twenty five beings bundled thought the automatic door the helicopter crews followed, the door closed behind them, their headsets crackled, "All cadets down the corridor turn left" they moved off, the vibrating of pumps could be feb, the corridor cleared of smoke "area pressurized" came the voice again, a wall hissed and moved aside, they were in a large room with tables and chairs.

"OK. OK. get the suits off and settle down, drinks are in the machine and we have some 'Dyhi' breakfasts on the side just add hot water".

"Right the facts! You will be the last group to leave, the Shuttle couldn't get hack so we've got to improvise, you have to build your own one person R.S.2. Rocket they were developed back in 1997 hut they are still reliable we have just enough fuel for one launch each".

The instructor looked around at the bedraggled group, "we want you to take some images along as well, we've been to the archives and found some footage of early Rockets and the first Moon missions we'll run these as we go along today" .

"Your main job though is to build your own Rocket, that is assemble engine fixings, fins and a recovery system, the engineers will fuel you up on the pad".

"You will all launch your own rocket, that's it oh and good luck"
