Helping children understand the joys of cooking

E-mail Print PDF

This Saturday (25 February), Ely Farmers’ Market will be the place to be for any boy or girl interested in good, wholesome cooking.

This month's Farmers Market's food activity is led by Richard Crozier, a renown ‘Kiddy Cook’ will be running a cooking workshop for children from 9am to 10.30am.

Richard is a local chef who will be using produce sourced from the market including eggs, sausages, chicken plus much more. There will also be a chance to learn how to make butter with the aim of teaching children the basics of cooking nutritious, balanced and simple dishes.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of the Community and Environment Sub-Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Learning to cook good food is a valuable life lesson. So many children now seem to grow up thinking cooking is simply putting a ready made meal in the microwave or pizza in the oven. However real cooking is not that hard and anyone in Ely on Saturday morning will see how using simple ingredients and easy to follow cooking techniques can make fantastic food.”

Established in July 2000, the Farmers’ Market sees thousands of shoppers visit every 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month to the pick up some of the best food and produce in the region.

The Market opens at 8.30am to 2pm with stallholders offering fresh fruit and vegetables, beef, pork, game and poultry, eggs, bread and cakes, plus preserves and sauces.
