What are the Cromwells up to this February?
This half term, visitors to Ely can learn a little more about what life was like in the 17th Century thanks to the experts at Oliver Cromwell House.
On Tuesday 14 February between 11am and 12.30pm, visitors to the House will hear from a historic character will tell them about civil war battles and the scraps of food they had to eat.
Visitors will also be challenged to the 17th century version of a ‘bushtucker trial’ as the Cromwell’s kitchen maid offers food with unusual flavours to challenge the modern taste buds.
There will also be a host of competitions and things to find around the House with objects such as hives, urns, couvre feu, leather jugs, forage caps and bumrolls to find and work out their use.
Tracey Harding, Tourism & Town Centres Team Leader at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “During the Civil War food was in very short supply with soldiers, families and even the wealthy having to be creative with the ingredients at they could get. Things were very tough which is why this half term we decided to have a special event to help visitors to Oliver Cromwell House hear, see and taste the conditions which their ancestors had to cope with every day. So if you want to know what life in the 17th Century was really like come along and see us next week.”
