Ely Cathedral

Also know as "The Ship Of The Fens" (and sometimes even as "Cromwell's Castle") Ely Cathedral rises impressively from the Ely hill and is seen for miles around like a shining beacon.

Built by William the Conqueror after the lengthy rebellion of local hero Hereward The Wake, Ely Cathedral stands as perhaps the best example of a Norman Cathedral in the country.

It is less well know that Oliver Cromwell later closed the Cathedral for around 13 years and supposedly used it as his stables during that time!
