On
asking Oliver Cromwell Reincarnate if he is happy with modern Ely it has
become apparent that the Lord Protector has an axe to grind with the successive
governors of Ely...
"It
is nice to see that my old house has been recognised at last and is promoted
as such even although it has taken nearly 4oo years. But looking around
the City, it's as though I was never here..!"
"In 1636 I inherited a large
estate from my uncle Sir Thomas Steward in Ely. My inheritance also brought
me the position of local tax collector, "Farmer of the Tithes" of the
two Ely parishes: St Mary's and Holy Trinity. I was responsible for seeing
that local taxes were paid to the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. It
made me into a man of property with considerable local status in the area.
I lived in Ely for 10 years as a wealthy man and happily pursued my political
interests becoming the MP for Cambridge in 1640. Looking back, it was
the happiest time of my life.
My birthplace of Huntingdon, and my second home of St-Ives both have substantial
Monuments to my memory, as has my final London dwelling. But Ely's most
beauteous surroundings, my favorite home chooses to ignore my very existence.
True I had to close the Local Cathedral for a few years using it as a
barracks for my Troops and Horses, but I was its major benefactor and
the clergy at that time was corrupt in the eyes of God. It had to be done!"

| On the basis
of what was then, and is now, here are my demands...
The
Cathedral was bequeathed to me by God and in future it will be known as
Cromwells Castle...
A Monumental Statue of myself is to be built and Staged on the green outside
my Ely home. The Statue is to be looking towards my house, the holy book
held high in my left hand, the Sword in a lowered position in my right...
Local and Regional Schools to be told the TRUTH of my life along with
the circumstances of the times that forced this mighty country to go to
War with itself and the lessons learned of it.
To this end I am making myself available to the places of learning...
My Body and Head are to be exhumed and reburied in Ely to Rest in long
deserved peace...
I am to be instated as Ely's Mayor and Collector of the Tithes for
this year and next, receiving payment made jointly by The Tourist
Board, Local Council and suitable funding bodies.
