sorry, left a rather vital word out of the last message (maybe something to do with typing on the laptop in the dark in bed waiting for baby to go back to sleep!). The missing word is Sutton (okay so there's a 'know' missing as well but that's less vital) and the first line should say that my family lived in Sutton, Ely (Sutton-in-the-isle). Sorry

My family lived in Ely from the late 60s to the early 80s. I haven't been there for a very long time (one quick drive through visit once several years ago) but that the village has changed vastly. I would really like to make contact with anybody who could tell me more about the changes and what life in the village is like today.

This is for Father Peter - I'm sure we must be related - my dad left England after his parents were killed during WW1. He lived at Southampton, his parents were Walter Sidney Moger, mother Florence. His name was Frederick Walter. I would dearly like to make contact with any of the English Mogers.

My John NIGHTINGALE was born c1832 and quite possibly from Ely Cambridge. Please contact me if you have NIGHTINGALE interests in Cambridgeshire. Loved the site and will be back!

I went to school in the UK in the early 50's and remember being told of King John,s treasure being lost. when he was attempting to evade capture by the Barons. They apparently loaded the Royal booty onto Mules and attempted to cross the fens to the Isle of Ely. En route the party became lost and the treasure was lost. Many expeditions over the centuries were sent out but nothing was ever found. Is this story true and can anyone help me with reference books to this event.
Many Thanks

I am a stained glass artist and my husband and I toured England for two weeks in 1985. Ely was the first cathedral that we visited and it was a thrill to see the tower as we approached. The museum was very enjoyable and informative, something I could relate to. We spent the two weeks visiting many cathedrals but we will always remember Ely as our first.

We are pleased to announce our new shop which has been re-stocked to include many new products. In our continued effort to make Ely On-Line pay for itself (which it doesn't at the moment) we are now stocking many items which feature Ely Cathedral and other Ely sites. However, we do not wish to be seen as profiting from Ely without giving something back. Therefore, we have established an "Ely On-Line Fund" - 5% of all the profit for all items sold from this shop will be donated to a worthy local cause yet to be decided - it may be help for local schools or the homeless or whatever. We will publish details of the progress of the fund at regular intervals - if you have any questions or suggestions with regard to the fund please e-mail elyonlinefund@ely.org.uk - The shop is linked off the home page and is directly available from www.ely.org.uk/shop - order now for Christmas! :-)

I think Ely sucks eggs! I lived there and should know. I think that the pubs are full of teeny tossers and the streets are full of genetic mess ups. There are too many houses and there is nothing to do in Ely but hang around in pubs like the Clown House Oops Town House. Maybe you could wander down to the river and take in the lovely fish and sewerage smell Hmmmmm!!! Or take a stroll through the park, but mind those dog turds!
Come on Ely clean up your act. I think Stuntney has more to offer!

Enjoyed your website--especially the church history section. I was searching to find a genealogist or historian who could help with a project. I am the editor of the Howland Quarterly for the Pilgrim John Howland Society. John was a passenger on the Mayflower and has always been associated with Fenstanton (just southeast of Huntingdon). I found 1949 entry that claims he was actually baptized at Trinity in Ely. His parents marriage record is supposed to be from St. Mary's Ely. Several of his brothers and sisters were baptized there as well. All these records are from 1600-1612.
His father was Henry Howland. I am willing to pay for research time and photcopying of records. This would be a great bit of information for the thousands of Howland descendants. Can you help or perhaps suggest a local person knowledgeable in records? I would
be so very grateful. Thank you, Gail Adams

I happened to be at the Dedication a few weeks ago and I thought previous visitors to the Cathedral would be interested in the latest addition there - the first major work, apparently, for over 400 years. The Processional Way retraces an old link between the Lady Chapel and the main building.

I hope someone on this site will get in touch with them to say hello and give Helen my email address. Not a day goes bye when I don't think back to those years when I was very happy, but to young to realise what I had. Ely was a wonderful place we were all a bit silly. Helen moved to london and we went are different ways meeting up occasionally when we could. I would love to find Helen to see how she is. Can anyone help?

I am writing a serious academic study of my ancestor, Mercy Holbridge Disbrow, who was persecuted for witchcraft at Fairfield, Connecticut Colony, in 1692, where she lived (she was born in 1637, probably Massachusetts Bay Colony, & grew-up in New Haven Colony, bp.1650). I have recently uncovered "startling" evidence of the involvement at her trial (for the defense!) of Samuel Disbrowe (a founder of Guilford, CT, and later Chancellor/Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland under Cromwell). Samuel, we now know for sure, was her kinsman, deeply involved in her defense by proxy (he died in 1690!) and who was, himself, the brother of the 'famous' Major General under Cromwell, General John Desborough/Disbrowe of Eltisley, Cambridgeshire (d. 1680). Mercy was married to Thomas Disbrow(e), bp. at Eltisley in 1625, brother to both Samuel and John, as we now believe from information I have uncovered and from our latest discussions on the Disbrow web-circle. Brother Samuel was involved in my ancestress's trial for witchcraft only through demonstrated proxy/ kinsmen & close acquaintances in several ways, which I will "go on about" in my book, of course. This is a very new treatment of a far too-long obscure chapter of Connecticut colonial history. I have also uncovered what I have called the "Disbrowe Network" in southern New England of that time, and would like much more information,...naturally...about people, places and events of 350 years ago, on both sides of the "pond" (there can never be enough data for me on this fascinating topic!). I would love to correspond with the antiquarian-minded, serious history folk, who might be able to help me unravel a still knotty question or two. Thanks so much for your kind attention,

But I have become more and more interested in the History of Ely as my Great,Great Grant Parents X 13 came from Ely. His Name was Jon Hauksbee or spelt Hoxby. and he was a Baker in 1570's He had a son also called Jon and went to private school under Mr. Spight. Jon went on to Cambridge University and gained a BA. in 1597, and an MA. in 1600.
If anyone can give me any further information

Ely Roller Hockey Club has almost completed its first season of league competition. May I congratulate you on an excellent and entertaining website, I particularly enjoyed the ghost section. When I was a schoolboy in the Kings School Priory house there was an incident which terrified us all for some time. One of the boarders claimed to have been marked on the hand by the ghost of Prior Crauden, whose chapel is attached. Another time the son of the then Headmaster and some friends scared themselves witless by playing with a ouija board in the mediaeval buildings that now house School House, and took some time to get over it. I used to be perturbed being on my own in the rather spooky Theology College on Barton Farm where it was rumoured that a novice monk had hung himself from the window.

Is it in there somewhere?
Anyway, what I would like is to receive some leaflets about the best things to do/see in Ely on a day trip (May 8 2001)and where to have lunch!

This would be very sad as those of us who travel to Ely from other parts of the world use this wonderfully interesting museum to find out about the lives of our ancestors.I have had alot of help from the people who work at the museum and I wish I could be in Ely to give them our support.

Great site. Great pics. This is really a commendation for Martin Lupton, his pictures on the site and his generosity in sharing them. He is a great internet ambassador for your community and the Cathedral. I suppose that in the States we don't take architectural grandeur quite as much for granted as some may in England. It IS good to be able to enjoy it, even from afar.

We visited Ely to find out about my ancestors. We found where they lived, the church the attended andthe pubs that they no doubt drank at.
It was a wonderful experience and i can't help but wonder why they ever left such a lovely town.
We hope to return some time.
can anyone tell me anything about Downham as we missed it.

Hi everyone and Happy New Year. I am a transplanted Elian now living in the States (since 96). I miss the area and the people terribly, especially as I have just moved to a new State and know nobody yet! I was raised in Little Thetford, went to Witchford VC 1978-83 and Ely VII Form 1983-5. I was an active member of Campaign Amateur Theatre for 12 years. Would love to hear from any old friends to give me a taste of home. Mum is here visiting me for the Holidays and I hate to say it's 70 degrees here!!!

I come into Ely everyday as I am a student at the Kings School Ely and I want to say that I think the Cathedral is a wonderful building, but the downside to Ely is that there is not much for young people to do !!Maybe some sort of a music/sport/shopping mall or something to that effect ??

I have an old Christmas album (yes, a record)that was recorded in Ely Cathedral, director Michael Howard, organist Arthur Wills, titled: Music for the Feast of Christmas. It's a beautiful work sung by the Choristers of Ely and the Renaissance Singers. I was impressed by the organ piece "Les Anges" and wanted to see what Ely Cathedral looked like. Has this album been recorded on CD?Thanks for the cathedral tour. Beautiful! The quality and tone of the music on the recording reflects the immensity and architecture of Ely Cathedral.

Many people change their Servers, and therefore their E-Mail address.
Try to update if you want help with anything, I have found that most E-Mail addresses over a year old have changed. Therefore request for help are useless if the person seeing the message can help but can't contact you.
Cheers,

I revisted Ely Cathedral for the second time this weekend. I had gorgotten just how ornate and beautiful it is. I like to think that here in Canterbury we have the best cathedral, but somehow it pales beside Ely. My three friends who came with me, thought Ely was the best cathedral they had seen so far on our travels around the UK. These fine buildings are worth every penny dropped into the donation box. Here in Canterbury there is no donation box, you have to pay an admission price which I think is very unwise. Tourist attendance has certainly gone down over the last couple of years since this was introduced. I feel that places like Ely who ask for a donation, rather than an entrance fee, are much more wise. After all, shouldn`t these beautiful buildings be open and free to all who visit them? It makes you think doesn`t it!
A good day spent by the four of us. Loved the stained glass museum. We thought it would be a bit boring but we were absolutley enthralled by it all. Well done Ely Cathedral.
Best regards
Linda

Have just visited your site and found it very interesting. Having driven through Ely on many occasions you don't get time to look at the views.
I loved your photo section. Great.
Thanks for the link to the thisiswisbech site. I'm adding a link from our site to yours.
Regards to all.

How lovely to find this site! I have a great interest in Yorkminster and always like to read any reference to Princess Ethelburga and her sibling sisters.

ELY's first ever nightclub opens its doors to the public on Friday, September 8.
The Lava Lounge, next door to the Town House pub on Market Street, will offer three floors of music, dance floors, bars and chill-out rooms to capture the club-goers of East Cambridgeshire.
Inside the listed building, clubbers will enter a world designed by Graham Jackman, the set designer behind the London Dungeon and the creator of the original Star Wars film set.
As well as in-house DJs, the club's owners have teamed up with Big Productions, run by boxer Daniel James and his brother, Newmarket Club M DJ Ben, to bring Vibe FM DJs to the city.
With a capacity of 275, the Lava Lounge will be open from Thursday to Sunday.
It will be licensed until 1am, although the music will keep playing until 2am.
Entry to the club will be up to 10.30am only, due to licensing restrictions.
There will be limited memberships on offer from £200 a year.

I went to Ely in Jan 2000 to visit Craig and Lulu Dalgliesh. Craig showed we around the river and the Malthouse - I didnt have long to stay in Ely - had a beer at the pub at the top of the street near the Cathedral, and then had to go - in a cab in a hurry - nearly missed my train to London!
Good to see there is a website for Ely!

Last year I posted a message about what the name
Ely means and got a nice note from Lee Gillet. Thank
you Lee. When did the town first get its name? Was
this when Etheldreda established the monestery or
was it already known by that name?
My grandfather came from Lowestoft. He was born
there in 1883 from what my father said. He ran
away and joined the army before coming to Canada
around 1910. I plan on doing some research this
winter on my family history. It would be
quite interesting to see how far back I can go.

Hello,
I have the following question:
I'm a great collector of recordings of the requiem op.48 of Gabriel Fauré worldwide. Maybe you did this work in the past. Did you make a recording of this concert. If yes, is it possible for me to receive it?
Thank you,
John Schreurs, The Netherl
