Episode 8 - "Picture This ?" (May 18th 1998 10:40am)
"So,
you were taking photos at the time ? Were you taking any in the direction
where the murder took place ?" "Well, yeah I suppose I did. But the sky was
black. That's the reason I got my camera out in the first place". Yaxley
got up and picked a camera off the bell rack. "This it ?" Jak nodded. "Yep,
and I'd just finished the film off. Take it out man. See what you can find".
Yaxley couldn't believe his luck. He'd only been on the case for an hour
and he had the chance of a photo of the murder being committed. He liked
Jak Jackson even more now.
Yaxley pocketed the film and relaxed back in his chair. "How well did you
know Reg Dixon ?" he asked. " He came up here for coffee a couple of times
when I first took over the box but never after that. Just wanted to check
me out I think. He was a regular in The Skaters Run though and I'd pass the
time of day with him in there. We'd chat about music, books and football.
Yeah, acquaintances, not soul brothers". Yaxley made a note of the name of
the pub which he needn't have done as it was the only one in the village
of Barnham. Should be good for a few leads and a bit of gossip he thought
to himself. As he wandered over to the window to look out across the fen
he could see activity down at the crime scene. Reg's body was being covered
and placed on stretcher by two ambulance men. Clunch and Hummer stood nearby;
Hummer with his cap off and placed across his chest. Yaxley had called the
local Police earlier to get them to take away the pitch fork for tests and
a scenes of crime officer had taken various photos of Reg's unfortunate
predicament. "Did anyone have any reason to do this ?" asked Yaxley looking
over his shoulder as he drained the last of his coffee. Jak pursed his lips,
"Weeeell. Although there's never been any trouble since I've lived in Barnham
I have heard that there was bad blood between The Dixon family and The
Worthington's a few years ago. Apparently, Reg was a bit
of a firebrand in his youth. Now he's been found dead on John
Worthington's farm. You can draw your own conclusions from that".
Yaxley thanked Jak for the coffee and his considerable help and made his way down the steps of the signal box. Now that the body had been taken and he had a couple of leads to go on he thought the time was right to get on with what he should have been doing originally. He had to find his new home; Flat 25b, Main Street Barnham and meet his new landlady, Mrs Parsons.
