Episode 11 - "25B Main Street Part 3" (May 18th 1998 1:00pm)
When the programme had finished, Bunter, as he asked Yaxley to call him,
said 'Wos a young 'un like you doing in a place like Barnham then ? Yaxley
explained about his job in Bradford, his
transfer to The
Fens and the events of that morning. When he got to the part about Reg being
found at Split Feather Farm, Bunter nearly choked on his Chocolate Digestive.
'Wa !! 'Thas my mum's farm. 'Thas my brothers place an all. Bugger ! No one
tells me nothin'. Reg Dead ! Gordon Bennett. We were playin' darts together
last night in the pub. Who dunnit ? Who bloody dunnit ?' Yaxley told Bunter
about the people he'd spoken to so far. When he'd finished, Bunter smiled
and said, 'I think I'd better give you some inside knowledge. There's some
things he don't know yet'. He went on to explain that Mrs.Worthington, the
old lady who met Yaxley at the farm was his eighty five year old Mother.
She still lived there, alone, and had been a widow for many years. John
Worthington, Bunter's elder brother by some eighteen years farmed the land
but had not been around that morning. Yaxley's new landlady, Su Parsons was
the younger sister of Clunch who Yaxley had spoken to at the farm. When it
came to Jak Jackson, Bunter hadn't so much information. 'Bit of a strange
one, that Jak. Got no bloody 'c' in his name. What's all that about ?' Bunter
had kinder words for old Hummer Thompson. It
transpired
that John had gone to school with Hummer until they were fourteen and when
John had started work full time on what was then his fathers farm, he had
insisted that Hummer be taken on too. He had stayed with John from then until
now, John having taken over the farm when his father had died. 'So there's
just you and John then ?' enquired Yaxley. Bunter suddenly looked rather
defensive. 'Oh no. 'Thas not right. I've two more brothers. One on 'em farms
out at Blendswell, but we don't see much 'o him. The other one moved up North.
Somewhere around where you hail from. He fancies hiself a bit. Joined the
Amateur Dramatics in Ealham when he were fifteen and we couldn't do nothin'
with him after that. He when to college in Cambridge and moved away when
he were
twenty
one. Works for some bloody Arts council now. Hardly ever see him. Although
he were down here the day afore yisty, funnily enough. Come back to see one
of his friends. Dint bother to come and see me though'. Yaxley could sense
unhappiness behind this last statement. He turned to his new friend and asked
' And what about Brian Worthington, the fourth son. What do you do, apart
from being an expert in crime fiction ?' Bunter's eyes moistened slightly,
or Yaxley thought they did. 'I yewster help on the farm when I were little.
Norman, the one that moved up North, weren't interested. But John and Cyril
yewster help Dad all the time. John went in with him and there weren't enough
work for three 'on 'em so Cyril bought his place at Blendswell. By the time
I came along there weren't anything for me to do. Now I mostly help out who
ever needs me. I do a bit for John at harvest time and the rest of the year
it's only one or two days a week here and there.' Suddenly, without warning,
Bunter's bottom lip began to quiver and he threw himself heavily against
Yaxley's shoulder.
He cried huge sobbing tears and his body juddered against Yaxley's. He looked Farcett in the eye and wailed, 'Your'e the best friend I've ever had', which understandably, surprised Yaxley, as he'd only known him for seventy four minutes.
