Geoffrey Conway <gefcon@lineone.net> - How
goes it with this Ely property?
Gabriel Leggett the great-grandfather of the first American Gabriel Leggett. He was born in the middle years of the reign of Henry VIII. The first reference to him appears in the records of Clare College of Cambridge University which leased him a house in 1565. The house he leased was part of the buildings of the medieval Hospital of St. John the Baptist, a former leprosarium granted to the college in 1561. Clare College converted the twelfth-century chapel (a substantial structure measuring forty-one by twenty-five feet) into a dwelling of two stories with four fireplaces. This building still stands, west of the town center. Here the Gabriel Leggett family lived with both the Thomas and John families occupying it simultaneously. In September of 1995, my father and mother, John Milton and Ellin North Ratcliffe Leggett, visited Ely and met the current owners, Roger and Yvonne Runciman, brother and sister, who showed them around the property. They took at least eight photographs, copies of which have been in my possession since January of 1996. The images show the Runcimans and my father posing before the exterior of the building, obviously a converted chapel with bricked-up gothic arched windows and doors. Interior shots also show arches, columns and bosses of the old chapel, along with two of the added fireplaces the Leggetts would have used. It has been some time since this structure was used for human habitation. The roof leaks, plaster has fallen, and it seems largely vacant except for some storage. Rebecca Boswell <robert.legg1@ntlworld.com> - Recently,
I received a copy of my gggg grandfather's will, Samuel Green.
It was found in the Index to the Consistory Court of Ely Probate Records 1449-1858, dated September 23, 1839 and proven by the Lord Bishop of Ely on the June 16, 1840. Samuel was probably born in approx. 1780 because it is stated that he died at the age of 60 on Feb. 1, 1840. He married Susanna BILLET on August 5, 1806 in March in the Isle of Ely in the county of Cambridgeshire. Samuel was a miller/farmer. I believe his father was a miller, also. They had several children, all baptized in March. Their names as followed: Samuel Billet, Frederic, Cornwell, Susanna, Catherine, Charles, Anthony Edward, Caroline, Theodore Billet, Matilda Sarah Jane, and Mary Ann. Information on Samuel and Susanna’s children are as follows: I know that Samuel Billet married Emma FOUNTAIN and had one child that died at a very young age. I think they had at least one for child – Frederick Billet GREEN, born around 1846 in March. He is mentioned in the 1881 census being 35 years of age. A wife, Emma, age 35 and a daughter, Susan Kate, age 8, and sons, Fred William, age 7, Samuel Billett, age 5, Jabez Charles, age 3, and Sidney Walter, age 2 months, all born in March. Frederic was my ggg grandfather. I know most of the history on him. He left England from a port in Boston in Lincolnshire and sailed to Canada. He arrived in Canada in July 1833. He married Agnes Nancy Bell originally from Scotland. Cornwell was mentioned in Samuel's will. At the time she wasn't married. She was baptized on May 26, 1811 in March. In the 1851 census it list her living with her mother, Susanna on High Street (Prop of Houses and Land March) I'd like to find anything else out about her that is available. Susanna was mentioned in Samuel's will. She was baptized June 19, 1814 in March. At the time she wasn't married. However, I do know that sometime later, she married William GOLDEN. I was reading something I got off the internet and saw a William GOLDEN listed as Governors of the March Consolidated charities. I also found a William GOLDEN, age 68 in the 1881 census. He was a retired farmer. He married a Susannah, age 68. born in March. They had two servants living with them - Annie HARRIS, age 18 from Upwell and Emily KENNY, age 14 from Wisbech. Also in the 1881, I have another William GOLDEN, presumably their son, age 40, born in March. He married Fanny M. age 36. I don't know her last name. William and Fanny's children are as followed as listed on the census: Fanny M. (10), Charles A. (8), William (7), Harold (6), Juliet M (4) Ernest (3), Percy (1). All born in Elm. They also had a governess, Helen BUTTON (23) from Caistor, Lincoln, a cook, Annie LEACH (30) from Walsoken, Norfolk, a nursemaid, Mary BUTLER (20) from Ramsey, Huntingdon, and a housemaid, Elizabeth COLES (16) from Benefield, Northampton. Catherine "Kate" was mentioned in Samuel's will. She was married to Orlando Horace Cooper at the time of Samuel’s will (1839). She was baptized on May 22, 1817 in March. I have no other information on her and would be interested in more if available. Charles was either baptized on June 4, 1819 or August 10, 1824 in March. There were two Charles listed to Samuel and Susanna. I'm assuming the second date was for the Charles mentioned in Samuel's will and the first Charles died in infancy. I have no other information on him. Anthony Edward was mentioned in Samuel's will. He was baptized on Feb 27, 1823. However, I have no other information on him. Theodore Billet baptized on January 3, 1826 in March. He wasn't mentioned in Samuel's will. I'm assuming he died at a young age. However, I don't have a date. Matilda Sarah Jane was baptized on March 21, 1829 in March. I have her as being buried on Sept. 9. 1829. Mary Ann was baptized on August 26, 1832 at the age of 19. She was buried on Sept. 13, 1832. I was hoping that by acquiring a copy of Samuel's will, it might state who his father or his siblings were or more about his children. However, it didn't mention his father or siblings. Therefore, I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on where to go from here to find out that information or if any of these names sounds familiar. Would records of land mentioned in his will, give his father's name? If so, a list of land mentioned is as followed: - Dole in Creek in March aforesaid containing eight acres and two roods of Land late GROUNDS GOODMAN. - New erected Messuages, or Tenements near the Bridge in March aforesaid with the ground thereto belonging called part of the "Acre Estate" now in the occupation of Burdell Phillips and Henry Richard Drew. - Dole in Whitemoor in March aforesaid containing nine acres and two roods Land late (Frushers??) - And those my five acres and three roods in Creek late John CROWLEYS - Lot or Dole in Whitemoor aforesaid containing Ten acres of Land late Barns's - 27 acres of Freehold and Copyhold Land in Norwood in March aforesaid which I purchased of Mess Edmund BARLEY and William PRATT the Trustees for Sale under the will of Mary BARLEY deceased. - All those my eight Cottages or Tenements in Whittle and Norwood side and Outwell and in March - 9 acres of Land in West Fen called Impey's Piece - Stock in Trade Cattle Corn Cropping Farming Utensils Any help in finding my ggggg grandparents and their other children would be greatly appreciated. am looking for information regarding George Ground KING b. Ely 3 Sep
1854.
I believe his parents were Robert KING (bap. 10 Sep 1828 - Ely) and Rebecca GROUND (b. abt. 1828 Haddenham, Cambs) who married on 18 Oct 1853 in Ely. Robert KING is possibly the son of John KING and Mary SOUTHBY of Ely and Rebecca GROUND the daughter of Thomas GROUND and Mary (GIFFORD?)of Haddenham. George Ground KING eventually ended up in London married to a lady called Jane Eliza. They had two children that I know of, Robert (my g-grandfather) and Ada. Robert KING married Nellie EVANS and their son William moved back to Ely in the 1930s to work in the brewery trade. I would dearly love to know when and where George Ground KING met and married Jane Eliza (I assume it was in the 1870s) and if it is true that he spent some time in the army (19th Hussars perhaps). Any information regarding the KING family (several of whom emigrated to the USA) or the GROUND family would be very gratefully received. I am descended from Henry Hall, (said to have been born 8 January 1830 in Southery, Norfolk) and Mary Fuller, (said to have been born 5 February 1827 in Littleport). Henry's first marriage was to Anne FULLER (sister of Mary) and took place circa 1850-1852, place unknown. They emigrated to America circa 1850-1852 and Anne died in Michigan in 1858. Mary's first marriage was to John CLINGO on 30 April 1847 in Littleport. They had two children in the vicinity of Ely; William born 27 June 1847 in Littleport) and Ann (born 21 April 1849 in Downham) The family emigrated to America circa 1850-1852. I wonder if the Beaucham in the daughter's name, and the Scott in the mother's name are the maternal grandmother's surnames?? The 1851 census for Ely Holy Trinity shows this family living at the "cottage on the rail road at Mildenhall", and Peter's occupation as Railway Porter. He was listed as being born in Botesdale, Hartismore, Suffolk. His wife, Mary (nee JAMES) is listed as having been born in Cambridgshire. In addition to the daughter Harriett, there is also a son, Peter Frederick listed with them, born in Manea. I am trying to establish a link between Raymond and Francois Nicole who started the musical box company Nicole Freres, of Geneva and Frederick Nicole (my grandfather) who moved to the Hull area in 1920. His children were: Jack Nicole, Catherine Nicole, Francis Joseph Nicole , and Frederick Charles Nicole. cole was the Bailiff in the City of Ely Court. Edwin Charles Nicole was in the Sherwood Foresters then the Royal Tank Corps in the First World War and was gassed. He moved to Wilburton in 1923 from London. He migrated to Australia. His father was ISAAC MURFITT, born 4th October, 1868, Stretham. Isaac married ELIZABETH SINDALL (SINDLE) in 1890. She was born on 23rd April, 1871 at Stretham and died on 6th February, 1959, Gedling, Nottingham. She was a midwife. We are particularly interested in information regarding Isaac, as he "disappeared" around 1922. We are unable to confirm his death, or to trace any movement since then. Any help would be appreciated. I have some information about YARROW families of Little Thetford and Little Downham but I have not been able to link them together. My own direct Yarrow descent is via my Gt Grandmother: MAUDE BARBER (neé YARROW). She was the third daughter of JAMES b. 1875 and ADELAIDE YARROW (nee BISHOP) b. 1877 of Little Thetford. The family lived at Wilburton Station for a long period of time and had many children. I have information about a Little Downham branch of YARROWS but it does not appear to connect to the Little Thetford branch, but I am sure that it does. I would like to hear from anyone who can help with information about both YARROW families in a hope to link them together. Ancestor Searching: Dewey
Date: Sat, 3 Jan 1998 From: Andrew Martin <andmart@compuserve.com> I am trying to research my DEWEY ancestors who lived in the Ely area from at least the 1800's onwards - in particular in Wentworth and Witchford. My Gt Gt Grandfather was called JOHN FREEMAN DEWEY and he was born in Witchford in the mid-1800's. He was married to ELIZABETH BOULTER of Wentworth in 1878. They had at least 10 children, all but two of which I have traced details of. One of these in particular was ARTHUR ROBERT DEWEY who is believed to emigrated to either America or Canada. Arthur would have been born at the end of the 1880's - but sometime before 1896 when my Gt Grandfather - ERNEST EDWARD THOMAS DEWEY was born. I would be pleased to hear from anybody who has DEWEY or even BOULTER interests and I would be pleased to help those with enquiries as well into these two fenland names. Yours hopefully, Andrew Martin: andmart@compuserve.com Dear all, love the Ely On-Line page, i visit almost every day since i found it. Looking for information on my ancestor RICHARD COX or COXE (1499-1581), who taught Edward VI and then was appointed Bishop of Ely by Henry VIII. Richard's father was John Cox; Richard had a son John Coxe (1530-1589), who had a son John Coxe (1560-1590), who had a son Isaac Coxe (1585-1590), etc. I understand that some of Richard's descendants lived in London, and some eventually moved to America by the early 1700s. So the Ely connection may just be through Richard; I do not know. Any information (or tips on where I might find information) on Richard would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Babara L. I'm interested in finding family of my great-great grandfather WILLIAM
COE, third son of DANIEL & SARAH (CROSS) COE. William,
his wife EMMA (SIMPSON/CUTTRISS) COE, emigrated from their
home at Fore Hill, Ely, in about 1887. He, married son George, and
their families moved to Hamilton, Ontario about 1887, then Toronto,
Ontario and finally to the Canadian west coast hamlet of Vancouver,
British Columbia in March, 1897. The Coe name is indelibly marked
in that city's behemoth growth to a population of over two-million
population in the mere 100 years since their arrival. March marks
the 100th anniversary of the Coe invasion on the Canuck west coast.
I have a comprehensive database of the Canuck Coe clan. I want to
make contact with Ely Coes who are descendants of DANIEL &
SARAH (CROSS) COE. He was born around 1807 at Wickambrook, lived
at Ely where he worked as a 'hawker,' died at Prickwillow Jan 3, 1876.
Sarah, born at Prickwillow about 1813, died at Stretham, May 1, 1894.
Dan and Sarah raised seven Coe kids. They, and they spouses were:
1)ROBERT, born about 1837, married CAROLINE HOWLETT. 2)
JOHN, born about 1839, married to ANN DEAN. 3) MARY, died April,
1915, married to EDWARD LOWE. 4) WILLIAM, born at Fore Hill
June 22, 1845, married Emma Simpson Cuttriss and died Nov 17, 1927
at Vancouver, B.C., Canada. 5) HANNAH, born at Ely, married
ELIJA SIMPER. 6) NATHAN, born about 1850 at Ely, married EMILY
DEAN. 7) SUSAN, married to JAMES JACKSON. Undoubtedly this
number of progeny of ol' Dan and Sarah spawned a considerable lineage
of descendants who have since made their homes and contributions a
global affair. Like our Pacific salmon they too know of their Ely
connections and, by snail or e-mail, would like to return to the place
of their origin. I ask your readers locally and globally to contact
me in order to re-establish the Coe clan contact that was lost two
generations ago. It was my hope several years ago to mark the 100th
anniversary of the Coe clan arrival on Canada's west coast with a
global 'reunion' at Central Park, Burnaby, where William and most
of his children lived, died, and are buried, but life's events overshadowed
pursuit of that project. (By the way, William's grave is marked with
a gravestone. His lifelong companion Emma, beside him, is not so acknowledged.
I have initiated a memorial fund to accept contributions so that her
gravesite may be equally acknowledged.) I look forward to, and will
promptly respond to every Daniel Coe related communication. Bob,
Tyler & Heidi Coe, 487 Millbourne Road East, Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada, T6K 0P4. E-MAIL ME WITH
