spellcheck is not a tool i frequently use. particularly with windows,
which assumes everybody is american. so i hesitate before i commit
"disconsolate" and "hiatus"
to paper. this pairing seem appropriate this morning - the latter
brought about to some extent by the former - as other commitments
and family holidays impose a break in the run of live music at pure.
maybe the break will give us a chance to re think our strategy.
disconsolate is not a packet of menthol cigarettes,
and it is no use pretending that the response to pure live hasn't
been a little disappointing. on thursday
night another paltry crowd enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining set from
folk trio mick's kitchen.
weaving a diverse range of folk styles around a bunch of irish standards
the band surely deserved a better turnout
than this and the question has to be asked -
does the city of ely really have the desire for a live music venue.
again, we seem to have misjudged the musical wants and needs of the
public and it would seem that you guys have better ways of spending
your thursday evenings than tramping down to the cloisters. media
response to the shows has also been disappointing. despite
relentless telephone and email advice to the combined artillery of
the cambridge evening news, the town crier,
the ely weekly news, the ely standard, the cambridge weekly news,
radio cambridge and radio star, very little coverage has been
afforded to project. radio star have especially
surprised me as one of their own dj's, marcus deaves, is manager of
the club and helped us with the conception of the whole idea.
the whole concept was assembled to raise funds
for a free festival in ely and as a spin off, to hopefully do a little
for local charities. alas, we can't claim to have been wildly
successful in either aim and i have now watched a string of bands
give their all, for less than their usual asking price, to a largely
indifferent populace.
though small, the audiences have for the most part been enthusiastic
and mick's kitchen were given
a warm reception for a very enjoyable evening. we're grateful to them,
and to all the bands that have performed through the summer, but the
end of the summer is in sight and perhaps after a break we will be
able to decide if some kind of shift in our way of perceiving ely's
live music scene is required, or just a subscription
to sky tv.
i am happy to enter into discussion with anyone over any matters they
might raise concerning live music in ely - preferably over a pint.
i am available most thursday evenings
peace, love and a five string bass.
