"LOCAL ROCK" Column covering Local Music & Musicans "Fil's Throbbing Column" looks good on paper but, in reality, Ely's "live music scene" is a serious business. The phrase itself is something of a misnomer, given the paucity of the subject and the short, and lazy, answer is - there isn't one. THURSDAY 16th May - REAL NUMBERS - READ A REVIEW HERE THURSDAY 16th May - DUVET - READ A REVIEW HERE 21st may well. I've misjudged you. I've tried running before I could walk, I've put the cart before the horse, all my eggs in one basket, looked for two birds in a bush and counted all my chickens. After all, we've only known each other a few weeks and there I was, abusing your good intentions and getting slapped in the face, and rightly so. I had rashly assumed [assumed rashly?] that by marrying live music to a regular live music venue I could anticipate the pitter patter of live music enthusiasts' feet. Well. Slap my wrists. You have to feel for the band in these situations. A half empty theatre can be an intimidating proposition for the most seasoned campaigner and REALNUMBERS, the subject of an exhaustive review by sir michael of gillettshire elsewhere, definitely took time to settle down at PURE last Thursday. Much improved for the second set of the evening, possibly having loosened up a little, or possibly inspired by the new floor spot feature at PURE, real numbers finally delivered an impressive job in difficult circumstances. Did I mention the floor spot? Carried off on the night with considerable aplomb by rob-birthday-boy-curtis, it is hoped that the open mic session between the main band's first and second set will become a regular feature of PURE live. Contenders for the empty chair require nerves of steel or, in rob's case, copious quantities of vodka and orange, if they are to confront a meagre audience such as the one we had last week. Here's hoping
that JEFF will redress the balance a
little. I've looked at the competition and I don't believe that "death
by d.i.y.", "horizon", "bad girls", and "friends
[rpt] " are anything to be scared of. Neither do I feel that
the admission charge of three pounds is extortionate. JEFF
are another outfit recently slimmed down to a three piece [perhaps
the money goes further] having just unloaded clifford ward's guitar
and vocals and I am looking forward hugely to how this will alter
their sound and style. What could be more tempting -here we have a
young band, local favourites, undergoing an intriguing reconstruction.
