Local Rock Heroes Perform on Friday 27th April

Three local bands will be throwing down the gauntlet to all rock, pop and club dance music bands in Cambridgeshire on Friday 27th April at The Maltings, Ely. Huntingdon-based heroes RiMM, winners of last year’s Ely Band Contest, will be joined by Ely’s Jeff and Miss Black America from Bury St. Edmunds at the Ely Band Contest 2001 launch gig.

Judging last year’s competition former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock felt that the Huntingdon-based rock trio RiMM had the edge: "They had a good stage presence and were very tight." RiMM used the free studio time which they won to produce a nine-track mini-album of their upbeat rock songs. RiMM formed in 1998. They are Andrew Bennett (Vocals & Drums), Craig Maddocks (Guitar) and Russell Youthed (Bass Guitar). They draw from a wide range of influences to produce their own style of alternative rock with a slight affinity for the sixties.

Four piece band Jeff (Ian, Cliff, Josh and Andrew) from Ely were last year’s audience choice. They say that each of their band members has different influences, but they all like Hendrix, The Stereophonics and various punk artists. Their sounds are definitely plugged-in.

Miss Black America formed in October 1999 when singer Seymour met bassist Mike and drummer Neil at a drum 'n' bass gig in Cambridge. When Seymour seriously injured his finger in October 2000 they had to withdraw from the Ely Band Contest 2000 final and guitarist Gish subsequently joined the band. Miss Black America finds inspiration for its angry sounds from The Clash, Primal Scream, early Manics, Tori Amos, Public Enemy, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and KRS-1. Last August they supported the Dandy Warhols when they toured the UK.

Bands entering the Ely Band Contest 2001 should send in a demo CD or minidisc by 31st July. It should feature three original tracks (or two tracks plus one cover that will be judged on its originality of interpretation – sorry, no tribute bands). There are no restrictions on style, content and instrumentation - provided you can perform live on stage. Entrance to the contest is free and open to any band that’s based in or around Cambridgeshire. Call 01353 669022 for an entry form and/or further information.

So ring first and then get along to the launch gig yourself for only £3.50 (on the door) to see whether these three bands have an unbeatable line-up.

The
Final line up..!

Six local bands performed live and unleashed at the final of the second Ely Band Contest which took place at the Maltings, Ely on Friday 6th October.

The finalists were selected from two heats, with judges whittling down an original 27 entries to just six. Forming the final line-up, the electric acoustic sounds of Ricky Howlett, the funk rock of RiMM, a Huntingdon based trio,  the plugged-in sounds of recently formed Ely band - Jeff , the alternative rock of Cambridge’s Buried Trevor, the harmonic melodies of Green T, and the energy of Miss Black America.

Each band played a half-hour set, with judges on the night including former Sex-Pistol Glen Matlock, Andy Bee from X-CEL FM and Roger Gunkel of Meadowside Recording Studios in Wisbech. The bands were judged on musical ability, originality, and the ‘X’ factor, that hard to define star quality.

Sponsored by Vitaminic, Europe’s leading on line music community, the prizes up for grabs included a cash prize of £250, as well as one day (nine hours) at  Meadowside studios in Wisbech. Generously sponsored by City of Ely Council, and organised by ADeC (Arts Development in East) the competition will provide a launch pad for the abundance of local talent

RiMM take ‘ely best band 2000’ title

Local band RiMM walked away with the title ADeC‘ Ely Best Band 2000’, a cash prize of £250 sponsored by Vitaminic and a days recording time, at the final of the Ely Band Competition held at the Maltings on Friday. Judges on the night included former sex-pistol and punk icon Glen Matlock along with Andy B and Andy Harvey from X-Cel FM, Roger Gunkel from the Meadowside Recording Studios in Wisbech, James Butcher from Fiddlestix and Greg Butler from Greg’s Greats ‘rare record company’.

The final decision was based on musicianship, presentation, quality of material, and that elusive ‘X’ factor. Huntingdon based trio ‘RiMM’ also took the prize for best song with ‘Are you Winning’. Judge, Glen Matlock was impressed with the standard of all five final bands – Buried Trevor Green T, Jeff, Ricky Howlett and RiMM. ‘They were all professional and enthusiastic, but RiMM had the edge, they had good stage presence and were very tight’ said Glen.

RiMM were overwhelmed with the result “ It really was the last thing we expected” said drummer and vocalist Andrew Bennett “all the other bands were brilliant!” The band who describe themselves as ‘alternative rock’ have been playing in their current line up for three years.

Ely based band Jeff won the popular vote with the audience poll...
Jeff have a big local following, who were highly enthusiastic on the night. Rob Jackson from Ricky Howlett picked up the prize for best musician, with the vote for best vocalist being split between Ricky Howlett and Jimmy Learmonth from Buried Trevor.

So did Glen have any advice for the winners? ‘It’s tough out there, you’ve got to be so, so good to succeed. RiMM have got it, but they’re going to have to work to make it to the top’. You can listen to RiMM’s tracks which are featured on their website www.RiMM.co.uk
